SafeWalkr Open Data
Every walk zone SafeWalkr has measured, summarized into one free, citable CSV: sidewalk coverage and busy-road crossing exposure for 9,731 home-to-school walks across 14 Fairfax County Public Schools walk zones.
SafeWalkr routes every home in 14 FCPS walk zones to its school on the safest walk its engine can find, using Fairfax County's sidewalk inventory, 2024 traffic counts and FCPS crossing-guard postings, laid over OpenStreetMap's map of streets and paths. This page publishes the per-zone summary of that measurement as an open, downloadable dataset.
Sidewalk coverage ranges from 46.1% in the Chesterbrook ES zone to 99.9% in the Cardinal Forest ES zone. Crossing exposure runs the other way: 21% of homes district-wide cross a road carrying 10,000 or more vehicles a day, and 173 homes (1.8% of the district) have a safest route that walks more than 25 m along a busy road with no sidewalk at all. sidewalk_coverage_pct | Share of total safest-route walking distance, summed across every home in the zone, that runs on a stretch the county sidewalk inventory or OpenStreetMap records as having a sidewalk. The short doorstep-to-street connector at each end of a walk is excluded from the denominator. |
homes_crossing_busy_road_pct | Share of homes in the zone whose safest route crosses at least one road carrying a measured 2024 average of 2,000 or more vehicles per day (or a road type that implies it). |
Methodology
This dataset is the per-zone summary from Walking to school, by the numbers. Every home in the 14 walk zones was routed once, on the app's default safest-route preferences, over the county's sidewalk inventory, 2024 traffic counts and FCPS crossing-guard postings, joined to OpenStreetMap's street and path network. Homes inside two overlapping zones are counted once per zone. The underlying per-home measurements — one row per address, with its own sidewalk share, crossing count and longest gap — are not published here to avoid mapping named streets to specific households. SafeWalkr is an independent project. Fairfax County Public Schools does not publish, endorse or operate it, and this dataset is not an official FCPS or Fairfax County record. It is computed from public county and FCPS data over OpenStreetMap's map of streets and paths, and it describes the routing engine's model of each walk, not a field-verified condition.
